Indoor Air Quality — A Complete Guide for Florida Homeowners

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a critical but often overlooked aspect of home comfort and health. Florida's humid climate creates unique IAQ challenges. This guide explains the issues and solutions.

Why IAQ Matters

The EPA estimates that indoor air can be 2–5 times more polluted than outdoor air. We spend 90% of our time indoors, making indoor air quality a significant health factor. Common indoor pollutants include dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, VOCs, and bacteria.

Florida's Humidity Challenge

Florida's high humidity creates ideal conditions for mold and dust mite growth. Maintaining indoor relative humidity between 45–55% is critical for both comfort and health. Your AC system plays a major role in humidity control.

Air Filtration

Standard 1-inch air filters capture large particles but miss many smaller pollutants. High-MERV filters (MERV 11–13) capture much smaller particles including many allergens. HEPA filters offer the highest filtration but require special equipment due to their high resistance to airflow.

UV Air Purifiers

UV-C light air purifiers installed in your air handler kill bacteria, viruses, and mold spores as they pass through your HVAC system. They're particularly effective for homes with allergy or asthma sufferers.

Whole-Home Dehumidifiers

In Florida's humid climate, your AC may not remove enough moisture — especially during mild weather when the AC doesn't run much. A whole-home dehumidifier works independently of your AC to maintain optimal humidity year-round.

Ventilation

Modern homes are built tightly for energy efficiency, which can trap pollutants indoors. Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) bring in fresh outdoor air while recovering energy from the exhaust air — improving air quality without sacrificing efficiency.
