Understanding SEER Ratings — What They Mean for Your Energy Bills
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is the primary efficiency rating for air conditioners. Understanding SEER helps you choose the right system and estimate your energy savings.
What is SEER?
SEER measures how efficiently an air conditioner converts electricity into cooling. A higher SEER means more cooling per dollar of electricity. SEER is calculated by dividing total cooling output during a typical cooling season by total electrical energy input.
Minimum SEER Requirements
As of 2023, new AC systems in the Southeast United States must have a minimum SEER2 rating of 15.2 (equivalent to approximately SEER 16). This is higher than the national minimum due to the region's hot climate.
SEER vs. SEER2
SEER2 is a newer, more accurate efficiency rating that replaced SEER in 2023. SEER2 ratings are slightly lower than equivalent SEER ratings — a SEER2 15.2 is roughly equivalent to a SEER 16.
High-Efficiency Options
Premium systems are available with SEER2 ratings of 20+ (equivalent to SEER 22+). These systems cost more upfront but can significantly reduce energy bills in Florida's long cooling season.
Calculating Your Savings
Upgrading from a 10-SEER system to a 20-SEER system cuts your cooling energy use in half. In Florida, where AC can account for 40–50% of your electric bill, this can mean hundreds of dollars in annual savings.
Inverter Technology
The highest-efficiency systems use inverter-driven variable-speed compressors. Unlike single-stage systems that run at full blast or not at all, inverter systems modulate their output to match your home's needs — delivering superior efficiency and comfort.
