When to Replace Your AC vs. Repair It
Deciding whether to repair or replace your air conditioner is one of the most important HVAC decisions a homeowner faces. This guide helps you make the right choice.
The 5,000 Rule
Multiply the repair cost by the age of the system. If the result exceeds $5,000, replacement is usually the better investment. For example, a $400 repair on a 10-year-old system = $4,000 — likely worth repairing. A $600 repair on a 12-year-old system = $7,200 — replacement may be smarter.
Age of the System
Most AC systems last 12–15 years in Florida's demanding climate. If your system is over 10 years old and needs a major repair, replacement is often the better long-term investment.
Refrigerant Type
Systems using R-22 (Freon) refrigerant are increasingly expensive to repair because R-22 is no longer manufactured. If your system uses R-22 and needs a refrigerant recharge, replacement with a modern R-410A or R-32 system is strongly recommended.
Frequency of Repairs
If you've had multiple repairs in the past 2–3 years, the system is likely reaching end of life. Continuing to repair an aging system is often more expensive than replacing it.
Energy Bills Rising
Older systems lose efficiency over time. If your energy bills have been steadily increasing, a new high-efficiency system could pay for itself in energy savings within a few years.
Comfort Issues
If your system struggles to maintain comfortable temperatures, has uneven cooling, or runs constantly, these are signs the system may be undersized or failing.
